Audio and Platforms 101

By: Cecilia Fay

You can’t have a podcast without recording audio. Audio content is the whole point of a podcast! Before you press that record button, make sure you have solid recording practices in place and the right platforms selected to reach your target audience . Here are some tips on recording audio and choosing  the right platforms for your podcast.

Equipment and Tools

Typically you will need a microphone, headphones or earbuds, recording software, and a device to hold your audio files. These are the basic items you need to ensure your content is well heard and preserved, regardless of the type  of show you publish. Most recording software is free, and you can find microphones and headphones on Amazon

Recording Location

With podcasting on the rise, many colleges, libraries, and other city spaces now provide podcast studios in the buildings. While these are great places to take advantage of, you can also record your show in your own home or office. You just need to make sure you record in a quiet area with minimal background noise. Consider soundproofing materials like acoustic panels or blankets if necessary.

Audio Editing

Sometimes content does not go as planned! Editing is a crucial part of making your podcast a success. You will need to mute background hums, clicks, and coughs with the editing software's noise reduction tools. You may have to make adjustments to the level of volume. If your show is lengthly or you anticipate a lot of content mistakes, you may have to invest in an audio editing service or expert for your show. The expense is worth it if it results in a clear, polished podcast.

Hosting and Broadcasting

Your hosting site may be different from the broadcast site . For example, a show can be hosted on Podbean and also broadcast  on Podbean. Audiences can catch your show  on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, and more, but your show will only be hosted on one site. After your show is live on the host site, you will copy your show’s RSS feed to the others and people will be able to listen!

Now that you know what equipment you need, how to edit your audio, and how to make your show go live, you are ready to record. Happy podcasting!
